R-500 flight tube.
Flight tubes and liners
The R-500 flight tube is a stainless steel UHV tube with conflat ports for the reflectron, the detector assembly, pumps, gauges and the ion extraction system.
The ports are tilted so that the ion beam passes down the optical axis of the extraction lens and is then directed at a small angle to the reflectron normal. This allows the outgoing and returning ions to be separated, making room for the detector. By using the reflectron rather than deflector plates distortion in the ion beam is minimised.
