Reflectron Assembly

Schematic

The R-500 reflectron normally consists of 38 rings (internal diameter 127mm external diameter 177mm, 1mm thick) and a closed backplate to give a total active length of about 380mm. The electrodes are mounted on 5 insulated rods spaced by precision ceramic spacers to form a rigid assembly. This reflectron can be dismantled and reassembled if the configuration needs to be changed (but note that spot welded resistors would need to reattached, see below). Additional length is available on the rods to allow extra plates to be fitted.

The assembly is mounted on a double sided standard Conflat sealed flange (250mm external diameter) which has 3 high voltage feed-throughs. The ion entrance plate, at the flange end, is grounded and gridded with 90% transmission woven stainless mesh (grid spacing 0.5mm). A second gridded plate is normally mounted about half way along the reflectron and is connected to one of the feed-throughs.The solid backplate is also connected to a feed- through. The third feed-through may be used if an optional extra grid is fitted (see below). Ultra-high-vacuum compatible discrete 1MOhm resistors are spot welded between the electrodes, giving a total resistance, front to back, of 38MOhm.

The reflectron is supplied with a vacuum chamber that encloses it. The whole assembly may then be mounted directly to a standard 250 CF flange.

Options

  1. The second gridded plate may be specified at a different position.
  2. The solid backplate may be replaced by one or two gridded plates (to allow neutrals through)
  3. The chamber may be supplied with an open end so that an additional neutrals detector may be fitted.
